England Tries at the New World

Sir Walter Raleigh tries first in 1584, but by 1586 the group of colonists came back to England. (Raleigh was not actually with them, only funding the excursion.) They returned with no found or stolen gold and with the blood of a native American chief on their hands.

John White attempts again in 1587. This is also in Roanoke. Once again this will miserably fail. White is a painter and we get a glimpse of what he saw. What do you think about these drawings and what happened to the colony of Roanoke?

  1. These paintings represent White's view of the Indian lifestyle. They certainly contain some elements of accuracy; but also his biases are most surely incorporated.

  2. John White’s paintings illustrate what he discovered at in Roanoke. He displays the Indians' ritual of fire ceremony and daily living such as meals and clothing. One of the paintings of the fence colony isolates them from the dwellings of the Indians suggesting a certain fear or protection perhaps from the attacks from the Indians. White’s prejudice is embedded in his paintings.

  3. These painting depicts how John White viewed the Native Americans lifestyle. He viewed them as a tight knit community that doesn't want outsiders. He also depicts how the native american look, what they ate, and some of their rituals.
Colony of Ronake was attacked, but defeated the foreigners. I guess!!!

  4. White depicts how he saw the indians. What i gathered from these pictures is that they were all about taking care of or protecting their village, no outsiders are welcomed easily.I really can't tell what happened to the colony- from these pictures. Roshonna Horne

  5. White contributes in his paintings an understanding of early American culture. The illustrations demonstrate physical characteristics of a New World. The colony painting seems as though it is surrounded with a privacy fence for protection of their settlement.
